A life between Copenhagen and Paris
Benoît Le Coffre arrived in the world in Copenhagen in 1671. His father, Claude Le Coffre, worked as both a painter and a sculptor, handling commissions for the court. This early connection to royal service likely shaped the path that followed. As a young man, Benoît traveled to Paris to study at the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1692, he earned the Prix de Rome, a significant achievement for a student of his time, though records do not show him continuing his studies in Italy.
By 1700, he had returned to Denmark. He took up the position of Court Painter for King Frederick IV, working alongside Hendrick Krock. His presence in the Danish court brought a specific sensibility to the local scene, marking him as an early representative of light Rococo painting in the region.
The brush and the palace
Much of his work was tied to the physical spaces of the monarchy. He spent much of his energy on decorative projects within royal residences. At Frederiksberg Palace, he painted twelve frescos. These works depicted scenes from antique mythology alongside images of masked participants at royal masquerade balls. His hand also moved through other significant locations, including Rosenborg Castle, the Eremitage Lodge, and the Chancellery building in Copenhagen.
His output was not limited to large-scale wall decorations. He produced various smaller works that captured different subjects:
- Portraits of royalty, such as his depiction of King Frederik IV around 1700.
- Oil paintings featuring figures in diverse settings, including a collection of Turkish men and a young mathematician at a desk.
- Detailed drawings of mythological or classical subjects, like Pallas Athene or nymphs riding dolphins.
- A self-portrait, preserved in the Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle.
A legacy in pigment
The work left behind by Le Coffre shows a focus on movement and light. His drawings often explored anatomy and posture, seen in studies of fauns or horses. Even his more decorative sketches for epitaphs or title pages reveal a preoccupation with ornamental motifs. He died in 1722, leaving a body of work that helped introduce the lighter textures of the Rococo style to the Danish court. His traces remain visible in the ceilings and walls of the palaces he helped decorate.
