However, following the death of his father, he transitioned from his art studies to manage the family's wood importing and processing company, Pundt & Kohnert. Due to the political climate in Nazi Germany and his Jewish-sounding family name, he underwent a formal name change from Kohn to Kohnert in 1937.
His professional life was deeply intertwined with the economic and political landscape of the region. He served as the President of the Chamber of Commerce of Bremerhaven and held various leadership roles, including a position on the supervisory board of the Geestemünder Bank. Following the destruction of his villa and company assets during the strategic bombing of Bremerhaven in 1944, he experienced a period of professional banishment after the war, during which he devoted himself to painting.
