A life in France
Henri Petit lived through the later decades of the nineteenth century. Born in 1802 in Dole, his presence is felt primarily through the traces he left on canvas. He worked as a painter, focusing his attention on the human form and the quiet details of portraiture.
His hands moved with the precision required for oil on canvas. The records of his life show a man connected to the French tradition of figurative art. While much of his personal history remains quiet, his work survives in collections such as the Musée Carnavalet in Paris.
The brush and the blade
One can look closely at his 1887 work, Autoportrait en maître d'armes, to see how he approached a subject. This self-portrait, also known as Self-portrait as a fencing master, captures a specific moment of identity. The painting is narrow and tall, measuring 60.9 cm in height and 32 cm in width.
In this piece, he presents himself through the lens of a particular skill. There is an inscription on the work directed to a friend, the professor Vigeant. It reads: "to his friend the illustrious professor Vigeant / H. Small Xbre 1887". This small note suggests a life lived among peers and scholars.
The technique used in his portraits involves:
- Oil on canvas to build texture and depth.
- A focus on figurative elements that ground the subject in reality.
- A careful use of light to define the edges of a figure.
Legacy in the archives
The work of Henri Petit remains part of the public record through museum holdings. His ability to capture a likeness is preserved in the halls of Paris. Though his later years are marked by the end of the century, the physical objects he created continue to hold their shape.
His contribution to the genre of portraiture is found in these specific, tangible remains:
- The preservation of his self-image as a master of weapons.
- The inclusion of his name in French museum catalogues.
- The survival of his personal inscriptions for future viewers.
