A Life Rooted in the Earth

Jan Trampota began his life with a different vocation in mind. Born in Prague to a shoemaker, he initially intended to follow the path of a gardener, a choice that perhaps foreshadowed his lifelong preoccupation with the natural world. His formal training took him to the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design and the Academy of Fine Arts between 1907 and 1909, where he studied under Jan Preisler. While his family sought economic stability in America in 1910, Trampota remained in his homeland, anchoring himself to the Czech landscape.

His early years were marked by a quiet movement through various artistic circles. By 1913, he had joined the Mánes Union of Fine Arts. In 1914, an invitation to Nová Ves u Chotěboře brought him into the company of other young Czech artists, allowing for periods of painting en plein aire. The interruptions of history were unavoidable; his service in the military stationed him in Salzburg, Bergheim, and Fondo from 1916 onwards. It was only upon his return that he held his first exhibition.

The Landscapes of Pěčín

The middle years of Trampota’s life were defined by a settled existence and a specific geography. After living in Nové Hrady and Vysoké Mýto as a guest of Josef Kubíček—where he produced a series focused on apple farming—he married Albertina Venclová in 1921. Following travels through Slovakia and Hungary, the couple settled in Pěčín. This location became the primary subject of his brush. Most of his later works are compositions of the local countryside, captured with an intimate familiarity.

His artistic development was not without its periods of struggle. In the early 1930s, seeking relief from depression, he traveled to France with Rudolf Kremlička. He explored the galleries and painted expeditions in Normandy, yet these works did not find favor with critics upon his return. This setback led him back to the Orlické Mountains, where he attempted to merge his established landscape style with new explorations of seascapies. Many of these later efforts remained unfinished.

Final Years and Legacy

The physical toll of a weak heart eventually dictated the end of his career. As his health declined in 1939, his ability to produce work diminished. He died in 1942 while seeking medical treatment at a spa in Poděbrady. Though his life ended prematurely, his presence remains marked by a small monument erected in Pěčín.

His body of work reflects the quiet transitions of a Czech Modernist painter:

  • Landscape painting: Focused heavily on the rural scenes of Pěčín and the Orlické Mountains.
  • Subject matter: Included apple farming, seascapes, and even the somber reality of Trenches by Danube from 1920.
  • Technique: Utilized oil on canvas, oil on cardboard, and pencil drawing to capture the textures of his surroundings.
