A life of lines and motion

Jules Engel began his path in Budapest, Austria-Hungary, before moving to Chicago at the age of thirteen. His early years in Oak Park, Illinois, saw him developing a drawing style that would later find its way into the studios of Hollywood. By the time he reached Los Angeles, he was seeking athletic scholarships but found himself drawn toward the Chouinard Art Institute. He spent his days sketching landscapes and working as an inbetweening animator at the Mintz Studio. These early habits of observation formed the foundation for a career that moved between the stillness of a canvas and the rhythmic movement of film.

In 1938, he entered the gates of Walt Disney Studios. It was here that he worked on specific sequences in Fantasia, such as the dance of the Russian sprites and the Chinese mushrooms. He focused on the contrast between bright figures and dark grounds, a choice that moved animation away from naturalism. During his time working on Bambi, he produced color sketches that departed from the usual realistic schemes used in production. His time at Disney ended following the animators' strike, leading him toward new experiments with form.

The geometry of color

Moving to the United Productions of America (UPA) in 1944, Engel worked as a background artist and art director. This period brought a shift toward more open experimentation. He utilized colors and shapes influenced by the work of Kandinsky, Klee, and Matisse, alongside the principles found in the Bauhaus book Language of Vision. His hands helped shape the visual identity of films like Gerald McBoing Boing and Madeline.

His paintings often reflected these same structural interests. Early works like Big Top (1945) utilized primary colors—red, blue, and yellow—reminiscent of the De Stijl movement. As his practice matured through the 1950s and 1960s, his compositions became less geometric and more expressive. He used techniques like collage and synthetic cubism, often applying paint with a thicker texture on the surface. The rhythm found in his abstract films often mirrored the rhythm in his brushstrokes.

Teaching and legacy

In 1970, Engel established the Experimental Animation Program at the California Institute of the Arts. He remained there as a teacher until his death in 2003. His approach to instruction was centered on a specific philosophy: he believed in not taking away from a student's individual style. This method helped nurture generations of animators who would later work on films such as The Lion King, Toy Story, and Finding Nemo.

Beyond the classroom, his output remained steady through various mediums:

  • Film: He created nearly thirty-six abstract shorts between 1963 and 1998.
  • Television: Through Format Films, he worked on episodes of The Alvin Show and Popeye the Sailor.
  • Print: He was prolific with lithographs and prints throughout his later years.

His work is held in several permanent collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Art.
