The Quiet Lines of Kyoto and Otsu

Born in Kyoto in 1734, Ki Baitei lived through the shifting seasons of the Edo period. His life moved from the cultural heart of Kyoto to his death in Otsu in 1810. The work he left behind often carries the stillness of these landscapes. In pieces like Mountain Village, one sees a focus on ink and color applied to paper, capturing specific moments such as an autumn day. His hands worked with woodblock printing and ink, creating books and individual sheets that recorded the world around him.

His presence in the art of this era is felt through specific subjects. He drew figures like Hotei and Jurojin, alongside scenes of nature. There is a particular attention to the way light or weather settles on a subject, as seen in Riding Through the Winter Mountains. These works do not shout; they sit quietly on the paper.

A Record of Landscapes and Figures

The compositions often center on the natural world, using elements like plum trees, irises, and crows to anchor a scene. In Plum Tree Landscape, the focus remains on the texture of the wood and the flow of the ink. He also turned his attention to the human element within these settings, depicting scholars in mountains or fishermen with their catches. Some of his work even references other styles, such as his Fisherman piece that carries traces of Buson.

His output included various formats:

  • Woodblock printed books: Such as the Kyūrō (Baitei) Picture Album, which contains a preface and postscript dated from the spring of 1797.
  • Ink and color on paper: Used for landscapes like Lanting Pavilion, dated to 1805.
  • Album leaves: Small-scale works like the Small Album Leaf of Scholar in Mountains.

The Marks Left Behind

Much of what remains of his hand is held in collections across different places, from the Minneapolis Institute of Art to the Musée Reims. These fragments allow us to see how he approached a branch or a mountain ridge. He used seals at the corners of his work to mark his hand. His work exists as a collection of observations, from the Two Crows on a Branch to the more structured Scenes of Ōtsu. Each piece is a specific record of a time and a place, preserved through the medium of ink and woodblock.
