A Life of Wandering and Witness Born in the textile town of Lodz, Poland, Jankel Adler lived a life defined by movement and the heavy shadows of history. His early years were marked by a restless migration, beginning with a move to Belgrade in 1912, where he first learned the delicate craft of engraving under the guidance of his uncle. This period of training laid the foundation for a hand that would later master many mediums. By 1914,
he had found himself in Germany, living in Barmen near his sister and studying at the college of arts and crafts. It was a time of profound formation, as he worked under Professor Gustav Wiethücher and began to find his footing within the European art scene.
