A Shift in Light and Color
Stockholm, 1860. A young Amanda Sidvall begins her training at the Arts and Crafts School, focusing on ornamental and figure drawing. The daughter of a tanner, she moves from these early lessons into the women's department of the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts when it opens in 1864. Her path leads away from the traditional brown hues of her predecessors. By the time she reaches Paris in the 1870s, her palette has transformed.
The Académie Julian becomes her training ground. Under the guidance of Tony Robert-Fleury, Sidvall sheds the heavy, muted tones of the past. She adopts a freer style characterized by pure colors and broad brushstrokes. She begins to apply paint in dabs rather than thinning it out, creating a texture that feels immediate and alive. This French-inspired approach brings a new energy to Swedish painting.
The Paris Years and the Salon
Paris is where her reputation takes shape. Between 1874 and 1877, she refines a technique that relies on confident color use. Her work finds its way into the prestigious Salon de Paris in 1880 and 1882. The French government recognizes her talent, purchasing works such as Lappflicka and Blomsterflicka. At the Musée du Luxembourg, she sells pieces like Lecture intéressante, a scene of a girl reading to an elderly man.
Her success is not merely academic; it is financial. She manages to sell works to both private citizens and the State. Even as she maintains her own studio in Paris from 1879 onwards, she remains connected to her roots, occasionally returning to Sweden to exhibit. Her large-scale painting, Den första läxan, achieves significant recognition when it is accepted at the Salon in 1882 and acquired by a merchant from Gothenburg.
A Return to Stockholm
In 1883, Sidvall returns to Stockholm as an established artist. She opens her own studio, a space where she both creates and teaches. Her teaching method is specific: she emphasizes the use of pure colors and instructs students to avoid over-thinning their paint. One of her notable students, Mina Carlson-Bredberg, would later become a prominent painter in her own right.
Her later works show a range of emotional depth. In 1871, her Självporträtt captures her with a serious expression, wearing a yellow hat with a blue rosette. By 1890, she turns to more somber themes, painting her parents with a sober color scheme. Yet, when painting her nieces and nephews, such as in Hjärtetjuven from 1884, she returns to shiny, light colors.
The end comes abruptly in the winter of 1891–92. Influenza claims both Amanda and her mother. Though her work was widely recognized again decades after her death, her impact on the transition toward a more modern, color-focused Swedish painting remains etched in the canvases she left behind.
