A Life Between Rome and Montreal
Born in Rome in 1967, Massimo Guerrera carries a history that spans continents. While his roots are Italian, his creative life found its center in Montreal, where he eventually settled to work and study. He earned a Bachelor's degree in visual arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal, a period that helped shape his approach to the various mediums he uses today.
His practice is not confined to a single method. Instead, he moves between drawing, writing, photography, installation, and performance. This fluidity allows him to explore the spaces where human beings meet and how those encounters change us. Since 1988, his work has traveled far beyond Quebec, finding audiences in Canada, the United States, Belgium, Italy, and France.
The Practice of Encounter
Much of Guerrera's work focuses on the delicate balance between being alone and being with others. In projects like La réunion des pratiques, which began in 2007, he creates installations that are never truly finished. These works transform through shared time and space with active participants. He treats these moments as a way to record the subtle effects of human connection.
His technical approach often involves layering different materials to create depth and texture. In some pieces, such as Renversement cognitif, he combines ink, acrylic, polymer varnish, and pencil on digital prints mounted on canvas. This method reflects his interest in the tension between the visible and the invisible. He uses the body and architecture as tools to examine how people interact with their surroundings.
Recognition and Collections
The significance of his contributions to contemporary art has been noted through various honors and permanent collections. In 2001, he received the Ozias-Leduc prize from the Émile-Nelligan Foundation. His exhibitions have appeared in important venues such as the Musée des beaux-arts du Canada and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.
The presence of his work in established institutions speaks to the lasting nature of his explorations. His pieces can be found in the following collections:
