Peter Mandrup: paveikslų kūrybos autorius
The Architecture of the Surface
Peter Mandrup was a Danish painter who sought to strip the canvas of everything but its own physical reality. Working within the tradition of abstract expressionism, his practice was defined by a refusal to let his works refer to anything outside of themselves. This commitment to pure abstraction meant that his paintings often lacked titles, existing as singular entities that resisted external labels or narrative explanations. His approach was one of disciplined restraint, where the act of painting was an investigation into the very nature of the medium.
In his early years, Mandrup’s technique was characterized by a specific, rhythmic movement. Until the late 1980s, he constructed his compositions through vertical strokes that descended from the top edge of the canvas. This method created a sense of gravity and order, building the image through a series of downward motions. His palette during this period was tightly controlled, favoring a somber arrangement of brown and gray tones, a stylistic choice influenced by his time at the Kunstakademiet under the guidance of Mogens Andersen.
The Evolution of Depth and Texture
As his career progressed, the rigid verticality of his early work gave way to a more complex exploration of space and light. The flat surfaces of his youth began to break, replaced by a newfound sense of spatial depth. He moved toward a sophisticated layering of paint, creating a tension between thin, liquid washes of color and thick, impasto applications. This interplay of textures allowed large sections of color to achieve a certain luminosity, as the light caught the heavy ridges of the paint against the translucent layers beneath.
His later works demonstrate a mastery of this tactile contrast. By building up the surface through successive layers, he transformed the canvas into a landscape of physical presence. The interplay of light and shadow across these varied thicknesses of oil paint became the primary subject of his work. He did not seek to represent a scene, but rather to create a physical environment within the frame, where the weight of the pigment was as significant as the color itself.
