Born in Baltimore, Maryland, his artistic journey began with formal training at Baltimore City College and culminated in a degree from the Maryland Institute of Fine and Applied Arts. His formative years were profoundly shaped by the mentorship of Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League in New York City. Later, his leadership extended to the City College of New York (CCNY), where he served as chairman of the art department from 1970 to 1980.
