John Thomas Young Gilroy: A Life in Art & Advertising Early Life and Education Born: 1898 in Whitley Bay, Northumberland, England. Gilroy’s early life was shaped by a formal education at Durham University. However, his studies were interrupted by the outbreak of World War I. He served with the Royal Field Artillery during the war before resuming his artistic training at the prestigious Royal College of Art in London. Following
