His repertoire included portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, but he became particularly noted for his "Rummelpott" scenes. These works captured the atmosphere of the North German tradition of children dressing in grotesque masks to collect treats, often juxtaposing these lively groups with a solitary, melancholic girl figure.

His later career saw a stylistic evolution where the emphasis on line diminished in favor of more pronounced surface compositions. Throughout his life, his work was subject to the political shifts of his era, including the seizure and destruction of several pieces by the authorities in 1937.
