The History and Origins of Tyntesfield

Tyntesfield is a Grade I listed building situated in Somerset, United Kingdom. Before its current form, the structure was a Georgian residence known as Tyntes Place. The property was acquired by William Gibbs in 1844. His wealth, amassed through the trade of Peruvian guano fertiliser, allowed for the significant expansion and transformation of the estate.

At its peak, the Tyntesfield estate spanned over 6,000 acres. This vast territory included 1,000 acres of forest. The management of such an extensive landscape required a large workforce, with employment reaching more than 500 workers at the height of the estate's operations. The property is currently owned by the National Trust.

Victorian Gothic Revival Architecture and Design

The transformation of the house from a Georgian residence into a Gothic Revival structure began in 1854. William Gibbs commissioned John Gregory Crace to redesign and decorate the principal rooms, establishing a cohesive aesthetic throughout the interior. These modifications introduced gilded panelling, intricate woodwork, moulding, and chimneypieces executed in the Gothic style. The architectural silhouette is defined by soaring pinnacles, crenelated towers, oriel windows, and arches, all carved from local Bath stone.

Inside, the design relies on a variety of textures and materials. The interiors feature neo-Gothic stained glass, mosaics, and stencilled wall panels. Ornate ironwork, produced by Hart, Son, Peard & Co., provides further detail to the structural elements. The chapel, designed by Arthur Blomfield, was modelled after the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. It remains a central feature of the estate, having been commissioned by Gibbs between 1872 and 1877.

The Grand Collection of Objects

The scale of the holdings at Tyntesfield is significant; no National Trust place maintains a larger collection of objects. The house contains a vast array of historical items, including a 14c ivory casket and a 16c illuminated manuscript. These pieces reside alongside a Gothic bronze throne and several gilt peacocks brought from Peru.

The library is a central component of the interior, containing thousands of books. The collection is characterized by its breadth, spanning various centuries and origins. The arrangement of these items reflects the personal interests and the accumulated wealth of the Gibbs family.

Masterpieces of the Art Collection

The collection held at Tyntesfield includes significant religious works that reflect the family's deep-seated faith. Among these is a Madonna and child by Giovanni Bellini. The presence of such works alongside The Mater Dolorosa by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo establishes a specific devotional character within the house. These pieces are part of a larger assembly of objects that the Gibbs family gathered over several generations.

The iconography of the saints is represented by Juan Luis Zambrano. His work, Saint Lawrence holding his Gridiron and crowned by a Putto-angel, dates from about 1630. This 17th-century piece is a central element of the holdings. The arrangement of these paintings within the house is dictated by the architectural layout of the rooms and the specific liturgical interests of the previous owners.
