Fanny Holroyd was born in Moonee Ponds in 1863. She grew up as the daughter of John Alexander Macpherson, who served as the premier of Victoria, and Louisa Elizabeth Fetherstonhaugh. Charles eventually became the director of the Tate. This position brought a certain level of formality to their domestic life. In 1903, he was knighted, a change in status that reflected his influence within the institution. Amidst these shifts in rank and responsibility, her own presence remained tied to the quiet, steady work of a painter, even as her husband's name became more prominent in public life.
