Early Life, Family and Training

Hermann Ebers was born on 21 June 1881 in Leipzig. He grew up in a household shaped by intellectual pursuits, as his father was the Egyptologist and novelist Georg Ebers and his mother was Antonie Beck, born Loesevitz. His upbringing took him through the gymnasiums of Tutzing and Munich, where the foundations of his formal education were laid.

The pull toward visual arts became a central part of his life as he entered his studies. Starting in 1900, Hermann Ebers pursued his training at the art academies in Munich and Wörth. During these formative years, he learned under the guidance of several notable teachers, including Gabriel von Hackl, Heinrich von Zügel, and Ludwig von Herterich. These years of study provided the technical grounding that would support his later work as a painter, draftsman, and illustrator.

Life and Career in Bavaria

In 1910, Ebers made a significant move by settling permanently as a freelance artist in Seeshaupt am Starnberger See. This change brought him closer to the natural landscapes of the region, though he maintained a professional presence in the city by keeping an atelier in Munich. His life in Bavaria was deeply connected to the local artistic community. He became a member of both the Münchner Künstlergenossenschaft and the Deutschen Künstlerbund, establishing himself within the professional circles of the time.

His presence in the Munich art scene was felt through frequent participation in various exhibitions. He showed his work in the Münchner Sezession and at the Münchner Glaspalast, places where his peers gathered to display their latest efforts. He was also a regular guest at the Ganghofermuseum, a venue that became a familiar setting for his professional life. These connections helped him remain a steady figure in the regional art world for many years.

Artistic Works and Techniques

Ebers was a man of many mediums, moving between the roles of painter, draftsman, illustrator, and graphic artist. His hand was as comfortable with a brush as it was with a pen, allowing him to explore a wide range of subjects. He captured the quiet stillness of landscapes, the character in portraits, the arrangement of still lifes, and the movement of animals. This versatility extended into his literary life, where he also worked as a writer.

A significant portion of his creative output was dedicated to book illustration. He provided the visual language for 25 different books, often working with stone drawing and lithography to achieve specific textures. His technical skill in these methods allowed him to create detailed imagery that complemented the written word. One notable series of his work involved a collection of lithographs and stone drawings created for "Aus den Memoiren des Casanova".

Later Years and Death

The later years of Ebers' life were marked by the heavy shifts of history. During the First World War, he served as a lieutenant of the reserve in the Kraftfahrtruppe. This period of service preceded much more difficult times for his creative output. In 1937, his work faced direct suppression when his portfolio, titled "Die Opfer," was confiscated during the Nazi "Entartete Kunst" action. The fate of these lithographs remains unknown.

As he aged, Ebers turned his attention toward his own history. In 1953, he composed his memoirs regarding his time at the gymnasium. These written reflections offer a glimpse into the formative years of a man who spent much of his life navigating the cultural landscape of Bavaria. His personal papers and a portion of his estate eventually found a permanent home in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nürnberg.

He spent his final days in the region of Upper Bavaria. Hermann Ebers died on 10 February 1955 in Weilheim in Oberbayern.
