A Renaissance Polymath
Hubert Goltzius was a multifaceted figure of the Habsburg Netherlands, operating as a painter, engraver, publisher, printer, and numismatist. Born in Venlo, he received his initial training from his father, an architect and painter. He later moved to Liège, where he studied painting and engraving at the academy of Lambert Lombard between 1544 and 1546. During this period, Lombard introduced him to the study of coins and numismatics.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Goltzius worked as an art and antique dealer. He was also a writer and publisher with his own printshop in Bruges. His scholarly contributions to numismatics earned him recognition as the "father of ancient numismatics," and he even received the honorary title of Roman citizen for his work.
Artistic Works and Scholarly Contributions
As a painter, Goltzius delivered various works, including scenes of Cleopatra, an Ecce Homo, an Our Lord on the Cross, and a Christmas Night. His repertoire also included canvases depicting Adam and Eve, the Carrying of the Cross, and Lucretia. In 1557, he painted a Last Judgement for the city hall of Venlo.
His scholarly legacy is defined by his extensive research into Roman history through physical relics. Notable achievements include:
- The publication of Fasti magistratuum ettriumphorum Romanorum in 1566, providing a chronological overview of Rome based on coins and inscriptions.
- Conducting extensive study trips across Europe to document hundreds of coin collections.
- Collaborating with figures such as Abraham Ortelius and Marcus Laurinus on numismatic projects.
