The Landscape of a Self-Taught Vision
Born in Hereford on the Winter Solstice in 1926, Reginald James Lloyd’s connection to the earth began early. At age two, his family moved to Dawlish Warren in South Devon, a landscape of shifting tides and rugged coastlines. He spent his childhood navigating the textures of beaches, the jagged edges of rocks, and the ancient stone circles of Dartmoor. These formative years provided a visual vocabulary that would define his later output. After serving in the army, he sought formal instruction through part-time classes at the Exeter School of Art, but his most profound lessons came from the natural world and a largely self-taught practice.
By 1956, Lloyd had established his studio in Bideford. His work moved toward a semi-abstract style, stripping away the literal to find the essence of his surroundings. He did not limit himself to a single medium, instead moving fluidly between different forms of expression:
His ability to translate the physical world into abstract form led to significant recognition. His works found their way into the collections of the Tate Gallery and the V&A, marking him as a significant figure in British art. His creative reach extended into literature through a close collaboration with the poet Ted Hughes, for whom Lloyd illustrated four poetry books, including the 1987 work The Cat And The Cuckoo.
A Legacy in Form and Clay
The later years of Lloyd's life saw a deepening of his engagement with the local community and the tactile nature of his craft. His mastery of ceramics became a defining element of his legacy, leading to the establishment of the RJ Lloyd Ceramics Collection. This collection was purchased by The Burton in 2009 and remains on permanent display in their Ceramics Gallery. His work remains a study in how an artist can remain deeply rooted in a specific geography while pushing toward modernist abstraction.
