Alfred Leslie was an American painter, filmmaker, photographer, sculptor, illustrator, and director. Born in New York City, his artistic journey was marked by a significant evolution in style and medium. He first achieved success as an Abstract Expressionist painter, but in the early 1960s, he transitioned toward realistic figurative paintings in grisaille . This shift was driven by his desire to mature as an artist and explore figurative ideas. Following a fire on October 17, 1966, which destroyed nearly all of his monochrome paintings, Leslie began to introduce color into his work.
