However, the true transformative chapter of his life began between 1635 and 1638, when he embarked on a pilgrimage to Italy. This sojourn through the heart of the Mediterranean allowed him to absorb the classical grandeur and dramatic chiaroscuro that defined the Italian masters, an experience that undoubtedly refined his aesthetic sensibilities and added a layer of sophistication to his Northern technique.
Upon his return to the North, Van Mander’s life became a fascinating blend of Dutch precision and international flair. He spent significant time in Copenhagen, living alongside other notable figures such as Abraham Wuchters , contributing to a cosmopolitan atmosphere within the city's artistic circles. His presence was so impactful that a historic building in Copenhagen, now known as the Karel van Mander House , bears his name, serving as a physical testament to the era when he resided there. Even as he moved between the Netherlands and Denmark, his work remained anchored in the high standards of the Golden Age , blending the observational realism of his homeland with the elegance learned abroad.
