A Life Shaped by Loss and Legacy The story of Kanō Sansetsu begins in Hizen Province, Kyūshū, under the weight of early hardship. Born Heshiro Mitsuie, he faced the death of his father when he was only sixteen, leaving him an orphan. This early loss set him on a path that would eventually lead him into the heart of Japan's most significant artistic lineage. Through apprenticeship and later through marriage to the daughter of Kanō Sanraku, he became part of the family that would define the Kyoto branch of the Kanō school.
