The Formative Years in Kassel

The trajectory of August Anhalt begins in Eisenach, Germany, where he was born in 1899. By October 1920, the focus shifts to Kassel. This move marks the beginning of a rigorous academic period. From 1922 to 1928, he navigates the halls of the Kassel Academy of Fine Arts. He studies under the guidance of Ewald Dülberg and Kay Heinrich Nebel, absorbing the technical foundations that would define his output as a painter, draftsman, and graphic artist.

His presence in the local art scene grows through the 1920s. He becomes part of the artist group Die FÜNF in 1923 and joins the Kasseler Sezession. His work during this era spans a wide range of subjects, from the quietude of still lifes to the structured lines of landscapes like the Karlsaue. He moves between the intimate scale of portraits and the broader scope of figurative depictions and nudes.

Artistic Shifts and Historical Pressures

The political climate of the 1930s imposes a violent interruption on his career. In 1937, the Nazi regime's "Entartete Kunst" campaign targets his work. Five of his watercolors depicting landscapes, a graphic work titled Zwei Frauen, and a painting titled Doppelbildnis are confiscated and destroyed by the state. This loss is a physical erasure of his creative output. He remains in the region, eventually settling in Eisenach after living in Kassel until 1935.

The post-war period brings a different set of pressures. By 1953, the aesthetic landscape has shifted toward the requirements of the German Democratic Republic. Anhalt submits several works for the Third German Art Exhibition in Dresden, including:

  • Schmied bei der Arbeit (1952)
  • Der Schmiedemeister (1952)
  • Die Jugend marschiert (1952)
  • Mädchen mit Früchten (1952)

These works, rendered in oil or drawing, lean toward a simplified socialist realism. While some records suggest these pieces were not exhibited, they represent a specific moment of adaptation in his long development.

Legacy and Recognition

Anhalt’s technical reach extended beyond the canvas into the realm of sculpture. His ability to translate form through drawing and graphics remains a core part of his identity as a modern artist. His works have found their way into significant collections, including the Neue Galerie Kassel, the Nationalgalerie Berlin, and the Thüringer Museum Eisenach.

He lived through the most turbulent decades of German history, moving from the academic rigor of the Weimar era through the censorship of the Third Reich and into the structured realism of the GDR. He died in Mihla in 1975, leaving behind a body of work that reflects the changing demands of the eras he inhabited.
