What happens to the pale, silvery lines drawn with silverpoint over time?

They turn a darker, warm brown color

(1750 - 1816) – Pinturas, Biografia e Obras Famosas

The Precision of Silverpoint

The artist works with a wooden stick fitted with a silver tip, a tool that demands absolute certainty. There is no room for error in this exacting drawing technique. As the silver tip meets the prepared paper, pale lines emerge, only to undergo a slow transformation. Over time, these marks tarnish, deepening into a warm brown hue. This process defines much of the output from David Boudon, a method that requires a steady hand and a patient eye.

In the early years of the nineteenth century, specifically between 1810 and 1812, the work takes on a specific character. The medium of silverpoint and watercolor on paper allows for a level of detail that larger formats cannot sustain. One such piece, a portrait of Andre Joseph Villard, captures a male bust with a precision that speaks to the technical rigor of the era. The scale is intimate, measuring only 2 7/8 x 2 1/4 inches.

A Legacy in Miniature

While many artists of the period sought the grand scale, Boudon finds significance in the minute. More than half of his known work incorporates the silverpoint technique, a choice that distinguishes his practice from many of his contemporaries. This commitment to a difficult, unforgiving medium suggests a disciplined approach to the art of the miniaturist.

The historical footprint of his work remains preserved in collections such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum. These small-scale portraits offer a window into the likenesses of the past, such as the wealthy Virginia planter depicted in his silverpoint studies. Through these delicate marks, the physical presence of individuals from the early 1800s is maintained, preserved in the subtle shift from silver to brown.
