A Life of Engineering and the Sea
Derek Gardner was an English painter who began his professional life as a civil engineer. After training in Glasgow and working for the London Midland & Scottish Railway, he served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. As a midshipman in the RNVR, he began painting watercolours of warships. His wartime service included serving as an anti-submarine officer on the destroyer HMS Broke, where he was injured during the storming of Algiers harbour. Following his service, he worked in the Colonial Service in Kenya, where he painted oils, watercolours, and pastels of local scenes, including flamingos on a soda lake.
After returning to England and retiring to Dorset, Gardner turned his focus toward maritime subjects. He became widely recognized as one of the leading English painters of marine subjects, specializing in detailed paintings of warships from the Napoleonic Wars and 19th-century clippers. His work was exhibited at Messum's gallery in Mayfair in 2005, featuring paintings of every ship in which Nelson had served.
