The Multidisciplinary Practice of Jef Geys
Jef Geys was a Belgian artist whose diverse practice spanned many mediums. He worked as a photographer, painter, sculptor, video artist, and conceptual artist, while also engaging in activities as an art educator, draftsperson, and author. His creative output included films, installation art, and publishing. Throughout his career, Geys was known for the strong social and political motives present in his work. One notable instance of this was his 1971 proposal to blow up the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten (KMSKA) in Antwerp, a project he described in a letter to the Minister of Culture regarding the idea that every institution includes the seeds of its own destruction.
In 1971, Geys took on the freely-distributed newspaper Kempens Informatieblad, a local publication in the Kempen region of Belgium. He printed and distributed this newspaper house-to-house, often in connection with his exhibitions. Since 1958, Geys maintained a meticulous archive of his own work and the Kempens, though this archive remained inaccessible to all but the artist himself.
