A Life of Art and Medicine
John St John Long was born in Newcastle West in 1798. He showed a gift for drawing, which led local people to contribute money for him to attend the Royal Dublin Society's school of design in 1816. After returning to Limerick two years later, he moved to London in 1822. In 1821, he had titled himself a "Historical & Portrait Painter" and opened a drawing academy at 36 George Street.
Beyond his early pursuits in art, Long became known as an Irish-born quack doctor who claimed to cure tuberculosis using secret formulas. His medical practice became successful enough to move to Harley Street. However, his career was marked by legal trials for manslaughter involving his patients. He died in 1834, reportedly from tuberculosis.
Legal Trials and Later Years
In 1830, Long was tried at the Old Bailey for the death of Catherine Cashin. He was found guilty of manslaughter but was sentenced only to a fine of £250. The following month, he was indicted for the manslaughter of Mrs. Colin Campbell Loyd, though he was acquitted in that instance. Long also authored publications such as Discoveries in the Science and Art of Healing.
At the time of his death, some of his former patients contributed to a monument at his tomb in Kensal Green Cemetery. He left his property, including his secret remedy, to his brother William.
