A Life in Color and Line

Born in Utrecht, Lizzy Ansingh was immersed in an artistic lineage from her earliest years. The daughter of a pharmacist and a painter, she was raised in an environment where art was a constant presence. Her artistic journey was significantly shaped by her aunt, the painter Thérèse Schwartze, who provided her first lessons in drawing. This mentorship allowed Lizzy to develop her craft, eventually leading her to study at the Amsterdam Royal Academy of Visual Arts between 1894 and 1897 under professors such as August Allebé, Nicolaas van der Waay, and Carel Dake.

Ansingh became a prominent figure among a group of female painters known as the Amsterdamse Joffers. This circle, which included artists like Marie van Regteren Altena and Coba Ritsema, served as vital role models for future generations of female painters in the Netherlands. Her work was even recognized on a global stage when her paintings were part of the art competition at the 1928 Summer Olympics.

Portraits, Dolls, and Literary Works

While she was a skilled portrait painter, Ansingh also gained celebrity for her unique dedication to painting dolls. She maintained a collection of articles and a circa 1740-1750 dollhouse, which she used as inspiration for her work. This collection was housed in her Amsterdam studio on the Herengracht, though the studio and the dollhouse were severely damaged by a fire in 1943 following a British bombing. The dollhouse has since been restored and is held in the Museum Arnhem.

Beyond the canvas, Ansingh was a writer of children's books. Her literary contributions include:

  • n Vruchtenmandje (A little fruit basket), published in 1927
  • Tante Tor is jarig (Aunt Tor has her birthday), published in 1950

Her work is represented in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
