The Studio on Quai Voltaire
A small shop at 21 Quai Voltaire in Paris held the presence of Marcel Baschet from 1907 until his death in 1941. A commemorative plaque remains there, marking where he worked and lived. He was born in Gagny, the second son of an art editor. His family life was closely tied to the printed word and the visual arts, with brothers involved in art criticism and editorial work for magazines like L'Illustration.
His training began at age seventeen when he entered the Académie Julian. He studied under Jules Lefebvre and later worked in the studio of Gustave Boulanger at the École des beaux-arts de Paris. These years of formal instruction shaped his hand as a draftsman and painter. In 1883, his work earned him the first Grand Prix de Rome for a painting depicting Oedipus cursing his son Polynices. This achievement led to several years spent as a pensionist at the Villa Médicis in Rome.
Faces of the Republic
Baschet focused much of his attention on the people who held power during the French Third Republic. His brush captured numerous portraits of the era's presidents. He had a way of documenting the figures of his time, moving between oil painting, pastel, and drawing. Some of these faces found their way into permanent collections, such as those at the Musée d'Orsay and the Château de Versailles.
His professional life was marked by steady recognition within the French art establishment:
- He was elected a member of the Académie des beaux-arts in 1913.
- In 1898, he received the title of Knight of the Légion d'honneur.
- A Médaille d'Honneur was awarded to him by the Salon des Artistes Français in 1908.
A Life of Teaching and Portraiture
Beyond his own easel, Baschet shared his technical knowledge with others. He taught at the Académie Julian starting in 1889 and later served as a teacher to Princess Mathilde from 1900. His studio was a place of instruction and quiet observation. He also produced illustrations, such as the twenty-four pieces for Drogues et Peinture.
His portraits often centered on specific, quiet moments or individuals, such as Portrait de femme au collier de perles or Portrait de jeune fille assise avec son chien. These works show a man preoccupied with the details of his subjects, from the way light hits a pearl to the posture of a seated girl. He lived through a period of significant change in France, leaving behind a record of its leaders and citizens through his portraits.
