early life and training johann jacob steinmann, a swiss artist, lithographer, and painter, was born on september 17, 1800, in basel, switzerland. as the son of a tailor, steinmann's artistic journey began with studying lithography in 1821 under godefroy engelmann in mulhouse, france. he later continued his training with alois senefelder, the inventor of lithography. artistic career steinmann's work is characterized by detailed panoramic
