Early Life and Artistic Training

Wilfried Otto was born on January 28, 1901, in Ludwigshafen. His early interest in the visual arts found its first direction through the influence of Gustav Hartlaub, who served as the director of the Kunsthalle Mannheim. These early encounters helped shape the path that would lead him toward formal academic study.

His training began in earnest at the Kunstakademie Karlsruhe, where he spent five years from 1919 to 1924. During this time, he studied under Albert Haueisen and Augst Babberger. Seeking to further his technical development, he moved to the Kunstakademie Berlin. From 1924 to 1927, he worked there as a master student under the guidance of Hans Meid.

The final chapter of his formal education took him to Paris. Between 1928 and 1929, Wilfried Otto studied under André Lhote, absorbing the specific approaches taught in the French capital before returning to his professional life as a painter, draftsman, graphic artist, and stage designer.

Career in Mannheim and Travels

After completing his studies, Otto settled into life as a freelance artist in Mannheim. This period was marked by a steady movement through the landscape, as he took study trips to Sicily, France, the Netherlands, and Sweden. These travels allowed him to observe the light and forms of different regions, grounding his practice in direct observation.

The political climate of the late 1930s interrupted this steady rhythm. During the 1937 "Entartete Kunst" action, six of his works were removed from public collections. These pieces were held in the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, the Kunsthalle Mannheim, and the Museum Saarbrücken. This loss of work remains a quiet, heavy part of his history during those years.

Stage Design and Later Career

The theater became a central part of his professional life during the early 1940s. In 1941, he took up a position at the Theater Gera, followed by a period as a stage designer at the Stadttheater Würzburg between 1942 and 1944. These years were spent shaping the visual environments for various productions, including works like "Die Zauberflöte" and "La Traviata." His hand helped define the look of the stage for these performances.

After the Second World War, his work moved to the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe. He continued his involvement in the theatrical world there, serving as a stage designer. His influence extended into the administrative and communal aspects of the local art scene as well, when he took on a role as a board member of the Malersaal at the Staatstheater. This period marked a long-standing connection to the stage and the institutional life of the theater.
