Born in Sydney in 1898, Erik Langker began his life in the coastal light of Australia. His training took place within the walls of the Sydney Art School, where he studied under Julian Rossi Ashton. This period of instruction provided the technical foundation for his later work. From 1946, he held the position of President of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales. His commitment to the institutional side of art led him to serve as a Trustee of the Sydney Opera House. He also spent time as a member of the Marshall Bequest and Travelling Art Scholarship Committees, helping to direct the flow of resources and opportunities for others.
His leadership was most visible during his tenure as President of the Trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, a role he held from 1962 to 1975. This period of service coincided with significant recognition for his contributions to the arts. In 1961, he was awarded an O.B.E. His work for the community was formally acknowledged in 1968 when he was knighted for services to art.
Artistic Subjects and Major Works
His brush often turned toward the quiet movements of the natural world, focusing primarily on landscape and marine subjects. There is a sense of seasonal change in his earlier works, such as Spring blossoms from 1948 and Spring arrangement from 1953. These pieces suggest a close observation of how light and color shift during the blooming months. He also captured the stillness of the terrain in Sunlit hills.
As his career progressed, his depictions of the land became more specific to his surroundings. In 1957, he produced From Australia, a work that reflects his connection to the local environment. Later, in 1965, he painted Australian Landscape, continuing his study of the terrain. His work remains part of the collections at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and the Sydney University Collection.
