The Life and Training of Georges Roussel
Born in Beauvais, France, Georges Frédéric Roussel was a painter specializing in genre and history painting. His formal artistic education took place at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he was a scholarship recipient from the Oise department. During his studies, he trained under several notable masters, including Alexandre Cabanel, Théodore Pierre Nicolas Maillot, and William-Adolphe Bouguereau. His academic success was marked by being received first at the school and earning numerous distinctions, including fourteen rewards, two special prizes, and the diploma prize for decorative arts.
Roussel's professional recognition grew through his frequent exhibitions at the Salon des artistes français between 1886 and 1923. His contributions to the Salon earned him various honors, such as an honorable mention in 1889 and a bronze medal at the 1900 Exposition universelle in Paris. His standing in the French art community was further solidified when he was named a Chevalier of the National Order of the Legion of Honor and later served as the Secretary General of the Société des artistes français in 1906.

Beyond his canvas works, Roussel was commissioned for large-scale decorative projects. These included the ceilings for the 1904 Exposition universelle de Paris in Saint-Louis, the decoration of the municipal council room in Ivry-sur-Seine featuring Le lendemain de la prise de la Bastille, and the wedding room of the Mairie de Charenton-le-Pont. His later years were spent in the Var region, where he was an active member of the Académie du Var.
