The Tactile Poetry of Hemp and Form
Mrinalini Mukherjee’s work emerges from a profound dialogue with the organic world, presenting a sensory experience that is as much about touch as it is about sight. Born in Mumbai in 1949, she revolutionized the sculptural landscape by eschewing traditional, heavy media like stone or metal in favor of dyed and woven hemp fiber. This unconventional choice allowed her to create works that possess a unique, fleshy vitality. Her sculptures are characterized by sensual, undulating shapes and complex, knotted textures that seem to pulse with an internal life, often drawing inspiration from themes of fertility and the intricate patterns found in nature. Through her meticulous process of dyeing and weaving, she transformed humble fibers into monumental, contemporary icons of organic beauty.A Global Legacy Woven in History
Spanning a prolific career that lasted over four decades, Mukherjee’s influence stretched far beyond the borders of India. Her ability to synthesize traditional craftsmanship with a modern, avant-garde spirit placed her at the forefront of contemporary Indian art. The historical significance of her contribution is cemented by the presence of her works in the world's most esteemed collections, where they continue to challenge and inspire viewers. Her artistic journey is marked by several monumental achievements:- The inclusion of her sculptures in prestigious global institutions such as the Tate Modern in London and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
- A significant presence within the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
- The enduring accessibility of her creative evolution through the digitized archives of the Asia Art Archive.
