Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, Wilhelm Volz was a painter, lithographer, history painter, genre painter, etcher, graphic artist, and illustrator. His artistic education began at the Großherzogliche Badische Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe, where he studied under Karl Gussow and Ferdinand Keller.
