The Architecture of Memory: The Art of Volkan Aslan
Born in the historic heart of Ankara, Turkey, in 1982, Volkan Aslan has emerged as a profound voice in contemporary art, dedicated to the delicate investigation of memory and the fluid nature of perception. His artistic journey is not merely a progression of technique, but a philosophical quest to challenge how we understand the passage of time and the construction of our own realities. Through his work, the boundaries between the tangible world and the ephemeral echoes of the past begin to blur, inviting viewers into a deeply contemplative space where history and subjectivity collide.
Aslan’s formal foundation was laid at the Mersin University of Fine Arts Faculty, where he specialized in Painting. This rigorous academic training provided him with a mastery of form and composition that would later serve as the bedrock for his more experimental endeavors. However, it was through his transition into installation and video art that Aslan truly found his medium. By moving beyond the two-dimensional plane, he began to construct immersive environments that do not just represent ideas but physically envelop the observer, forcing a direct, sensory confrontation with the themes of recollection and temporal distortion.
Materiality and the Sculptural Void
The power of Aslan’s practice lies in his ability to marry the industrial with the intimate. He frequently utilizes heavy, enduring materials such as concrete and steel, creating a striking tension between the perceived permanence of these substances and the fleeting, unstable nature of human memory. These structural elements often serve as anchors for more delicate components, such as textiles or projected imagery, creating a layered experience that engages multiple senses simultaneously.
In his installations, Aslan often employs several key artistic strategies:
The Use of Found Objects: He frequently appropriates and transforms discarded items, imbuing them with new meaning and turning the mundane into vessels for historical reflection.
Geometric Precision: Recurring motifs of geometric forms and repetitive patterns are used to distill complex, often overwhelming psychological concepts into visually digestible structures.
Multimedia Integration: By blending sculptural elements with the ephemeral glow of video projections, he creates a dialogue between the physical weight of the present and the ghostly traces of the past.
A Legacy of Contemplation
Aslan’s work is deeply rooted in the tension between structural integrity and temporal decay. His fascination with how much of our identity is built upon the fragments of what we remember—and what we have forgotten—resonates within a globalized contemporary art landscape. While his influences are anchored in Turkish cultural heritage, his explorations of subjectivity and the fragmentation of narrative possess a universal resonance that transcends borders.
Through his meticulous construction of environments like those seen in works such as Concern, Aslan continues to push the boundaries of installation art. He does not merely present an object for viewing; he creates a site for experience. His significance lies in this ability to disrupt conventional narratives, prompting us to question the very ground upon which our memories are built and to find beauty within the complex, often fractured, architecture of the human mind.
