The Process of Dona Nelson

Born in Grand Island, United States, Dona Nelson is an American painter who has developed a practice centered on the primacy of chance, improvisation, and touch. Her work often functions as a collision of formal order and procedural chaos, utilizing a variety of methods including pouring, staining, splattering, and stitching. Working on unprimed canvas, she employs diverse materials such as cheesecloth, muslin, gels, and modeling paste to create unexpected surfaces, textures, and reliefs. Nelson is often described as a process artist, emphasizing the physical act of creation where the paint-soaked medium becomes both the tool and the made object.

Her artistic evolution has seen her move through several distinct phases. Her early work explored geometric, grid-based abstraction, which she eventually moved away from in favor of painterly representational work in the 1980s, featuring landscapes and cityscapes. By the 1990s, she returned to abstraction, incorporating unconventional materials to disrupt traditional painting conventions. Since 2002, she has produced free-standing, double-sided paintings and "Box" constructions—door-sized painted panels that interact with the viewer from multiple viewpoints.

Dona Nelson has held solo exhibitions at the Weatherspoon Art Museum and the Tang Museum.
