The Life and Teaching of Fedor Burov

Born in Fyodorovka, Russian Empire, Fedor Burov was a painter and draftsperson who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. During his time there, he was taught by P. V. Basin, T. A. Neff, and P. P. Chistyakov, and he was influenced by A. P. Bogolyubov. His academic achievements included receiving a small silver medal in 1863, being named a free artist with a large silver medal in 1865, and earning a large silver medal again in 1867. By 1873, he held the rank of class artist of the second degree, later ascending to class artist of the first degree in 1885 for his work The Schlüsselburg Prisoner. After traveling and living in Paris, where he painted a portrait of I. S. Turgenev, Burov returned to the Samara province. He established a drawing school in Samara with a three-year program that included drawing from plaster and life, painting in two tones and watercolor, and oil painting.

As a pedagogue, Burov’s school in Samara trained several artists who would become known, including Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Konstantin Gorbatov, and Georgy Podbelsky. Despite his dedication to fostering talent among various social classes, Burov faced significant financial hardship while supporting his school. He eventually succumbed to tuberculosis in Samara.
