The History of Kedleston Hall

The presence of the Curzon family at Kedleston Hall is a matter of long record, with their tenure on the estate dating back to at least 1297. For centuries, the family occupied the land, but the landscape underwent a profound transformation in the mid-18th century. In 1759, Nathaniel Curzon made the decision to move the medieval village of Kedleston to make way for the construction of a new manor. This act of relocation allowed for the realization of a grander vision for the estate, one that would eventually define its character for generations.

The current house was commissioned by Sir Nathaniel Curzon in 1759. It was designed with a Palladian exterior and Neo-classical interiors, creating a structure that reflects the architectural ambitions of the era. While the house was built to reflect the influence of its patron, it has remained a living residence. Even as the estate transitioned into the care of the National Trust in 1987, the connection to the family remained unbroken, as the Curzon family continues to occupy a wing of the house to this day.

Architecture and Grand Design

The current structure was commissioned in 1759 by Sir Nathaniel Curzon, later the 1st Baron Scarsdale. Built between 1759 and 1763, the house reflects the refined sensibilities of the era. While Robert Adam is the primary designer, the project involved the Palladian architects James Paine and Matthew Brettingham. The central portion of the south front draws direct inspiration from the arch of Constantine in Rome. A massive triangular pediment sits atop a portico of eight pillars, with classical statues positioned above the structure.

Inside, the marble hall commands the space. It measures 67 feet by 37 feet in plan and reaches a height of 40 feet. Light enters the hall through an innovative glass skylight in the roof, a departure from the conventional windows typically found in such designs. This architectural choice allows the light to interact with the scale of the room and the inlaid Italian marble of the floor.

The Grand State Rooms

The marble hall remains one of the most magnificent apartments of the 18th century in England. It occupies a central position within the house, defined by its scale and the presence of inlaid Italian marble underfoot. Light enters the space through an innovative glass skylight, illuminating the room from the roof rather than through conventional windows. This design creates a sense of openness that connects the interior to the sky above.

The saloon, completed in 1763, is a circular room measuring 42 feet in width. It was designed specifically to function as a sculpture gallery, providing a dedicated space for the display of fine works. Adjacent to this is the drawing room, a space measuring 44 feet by 28 feet by 28 feet. A large alabaster Venetian window dominates this room, and the doorcase is also fashioned from alabaster, maintaining a consistent material presence throughout the suite.

The Parkland and Gardens

The estate encompasses over 800 acres of Italian-style classical landscape. Within this expanse, a formal 18th-century Pleasure Ground is defined by a ha-ha or sunken wall, creating a seamless transition between the manicured grounds and the wider parkland. A line of five lakes is joined by a series of cascades, providing a rhythmic movement to the water throughout the grounds.

The Bridge and Cascade remains a central feature of the landscape. Originally designed with a single arch by Robert Adam in 1761, the structure underwent a redesign in 1764, resulting in three arches that were executed between 1770 and 1771. The bridge is characterized by three round-arched spans featuring moulded hoodmoulds. Fluted roundels occupy the spandrels, while the piers are accented with apsed niches and a moulded sill band.

The Curzon Family Collection

The hall was conceived as a palace for the display of fine paintings, sculpture, and furniture. Within its walls, a vast collection of these objects resides, creating a sense of historical continuity. The presence of works by Peter Lely and Bernardo Strozzi provides a quiet weight to the rooms, offering a direct encounter with the brushwork of the seventeenth century. These paintings exist as physical presences, anchoring the rooms in their original context.

The furniture within the state rooms is notable for its specific aqua blue hue, a color that defines the character of the interior spaces. Beyond the European traditions, the estate holds a treasure trove of fascinating objects acquired by Lord Curzon during his travels in Asia. These items provide a different perspective on the breadth of the family's interests, sitting alongside the classical and baroque traditions of the house.

Visiting the Estate

The estate is situated near Quarndon, Derby, in Derbyshire, DE22 5JH. It lies approximately 4 miles north-west of Derby. For those arriving by train, bus, or bike, a free hot drink is provided at Kedleston Hall. The grounds and parkland are open to those traveling by these greener methods.

The restaurant is located within the Great Kitchen. This space, where banquets were once prepared for the Curzon family and their guests, offers a place for refreshment. The estate is a two pawprint rated location, making it suitable for visits with dogs. The landscape and the house remain central to the experience of the site.
