The son of Count Maximilien IV de Lalaing, he was raised in England before moving to Brussels in 1875. His artistic training took place at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, where he studied under Jean-François Portaels and Louis Gallait . As a painter, he worked in a realistic, naturalistic style, focusing on portraiture and historical scenes.
