The Maestro of Art Deco Posters
Paul Colin was a prolific French artist, scenographer, and graphic designer who became a pre-eminent figure in French graphic arts. Born in Nancy, France, he began his journey in the art world by apprenticing at a printing house at the age of fifteen. He later entered L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he achieved great academic success. Throughout his career, Colin was a master of designing books, theatre sets, and costumes, creating over 1,900 posters. His work is characterized by a signature style featuring bold imagery, strong clean lines, and brilliant colors. He was particularly noted for his ability to combine organic and graphic themes with geometric forms, often utilizing highly stylized or caricaturized humanoids juxtaposed with overlapping objects.
A Legacy of Theatre and Jazz
Colin's career was deeply intertwined with the vibrant nightlife of Paris, specifically the Jazz Age. He designed iconic posters for famous venues such as the Folies Bergère, the Moulin Rouge, and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. His work often captured the energy of the era, including his famous tributes to Josephine Baker. His posters, such as La Revue nègre and Le Tumulte noir, are internationally recognized for their vibrant colors and striking lines. Beyond his commercial success, Colin was a dedicated educator, teaching at his own graphic arts school in Paris for over 40 years. His influence extended through his students, which included the installation artist Louise Bourgeois.
