A Life in Mannheim
Louis Coblitz lived his life within the boundaries of Mannheim. Born in 1814, he spent his years in this German city until his death in 1863. His hands worked with oil on board and paper, capturing the faces and landscapes that crossed his path. He did not seek to change the world, but rather to record what was present before him.
His work often turned toward the people of his region. In 1837, he painted a woman from Hauenstein with a child, a piece that remains in the Städtische Museen Freiburg. He also looked at individuals like Marie Lamey, the daughter of Jacob Friedrich Dyckerhoff, in an 1852 portrait. These were not grand figures of history, but neighbors and family members, rendered with a steady eye.
The Subjects of His Brush
Coblitz moved between the intimacy of a portrait and the quietness of a landscape. He captured the light on the Rhine in 1860, creating Altrheinlandschaft, a view of the old Rhine landscape. This work sits within the Reiss Museum Mannheim, a place that holds much of his local memory.
His range included different settings and subjects:
- Portraiture: He painted William Shakespeare at age 34 in 1847, a work now held at the Musee Du Chateau in Versailles.
- Genre Scenes: His 1854 painting, Italienische Familie in den Albanerbergen, shows an Italian family in the Albanerberge mountains.
- Local Life: Works like Hauensteinerin mit Kind focus on the specific details of life in Hauenstein.
A Quiet Record
The paintings left behind are fragments of a mid-nineteenth-century reality. There is a certain stillness in how he placed a woman and child together or how he sat with a landscape. He used oil to build layers on his surfaces, whether they were paper or wood. His death at age 48 ended his ability to add more to this collection of local sights and faces.
