Born on December 16, 1947, in Québec City, Canada, Micheline Gingras carries the lineage of a tenth-generation Québécoise. She was the sixth of seven children born to Roméo Gingras and Rosée Dubois. Her family history is rooted in the movement from the rural periphery to the urban center; her parents both emerged from subsistence farming families located outside the city. They eventually relocated to Québec City in pursuit of new economic opportunities, establishing a foundation for the generations that followed.
This transition from agrarian roots to urban life shaped the early environment of the Gingras household. Growing up in a large family of seven siblings, Micheline Gingras eventually established herself as a Canadian-born American artist. Her life has been defined by this dual identity, bridging the landscapes of her birth and the professional life she built in the United States.
Key Series and Notable Works
The early 1970s marked a significant period of recognition for Gingras through her Mechanical Hand series. These works traveled widely, finding audiences in Canada, the United States, and France. Following this period, she turned her attention to the "Origin" series, which she developed between 1977 and 1979. This body of work reached a new milestone in June 1979, when it was exhibited at the South West Gallery in New York City.
As her practice evolved, Gingras continued to produce distinct series that reflected changing perspectives. Between 2018 and 2020, she produced "Malaise," followed by the "X’d" series from 2020 to 2021. Her more recent output includes "Inner Space Mysteries," created in 2021, and the "Anthroposes" series, which she developed throughout 2022 and 2023.
