    Born in the textile town of Lodz, Poland, Jankel Adler lived a life defined by movement and the heavy shadows of history.     The rise of the Nazi regime in 1933 forced Adler into a life of further displacement. Forced to leave Germany, he sought refuge in Paris, but the onset of World War II brought even greater upheaval. Driven by a sense of duty, he volunteered for the Polish army in France, though health struggles eventually led to his dismissal and a move toward Scotland. In the quiet of Kirkcudbright and later Glasgow, his work took on a different resonance.
