A Portrait of George Borrow

The work is an oil on canvas, measuring 80 × 71.1 cm. It captures a specific moment in the early nineteenth century, a period before the artist's life was cut short.

The Brief Span of a Career
History remembers the silhouette of a life that ended in 1833. Borrow’s output is defined by this brevity. There is no long progression of styles or decades of evolution to trace. Instead, the work remains anchored to the early decades of the 1800s.
The significance of his contribution lies in this specific portraiture. He documented the face of George Borrow, leaving behind a singular, tangible link to the past. The painting survives as a fragment of a career that vanished before the mid-century arrived.
