The Life and Art of Mary Cameron
Mary Margaret Cameron was a Scottish artist born in Portobello, Edinburgh. She began her art education at sixteen through the Trustees Drawing Academy of Edinburgh, where she won prizes from the age of seventeen. To refine her understanding of animal anatomy, she took classes at the Edinburgh Veterinary College, developing a particular skill for depicting horses. Her work often featured Spanish scenes, including battlefields, horse racing, and bullfights. In 1900, she traveled to Madrid, Spain, to study the work of Diego Velázquez, and lived for a time in both Madrid and Seville.
Throughout her career, Cameron exhibited many works at the Royal Scottish Academy between 1886 and 1919. Her painting, Portrait de Mme. Blair et ses borzois, received a "Mention Honorable" at the Paris Salon in 1904. She was also a founding member of the Edinburgh Ladies Art Club and the first exhibition of the Society of Scottish Artists. Cameron held four solo exhibitions between 1908 and 1913 in Edinburgh, London, and Paris. She died at Turnhouse, a hamlet to the west of Edinburgh.
