His father, François Johannot, was a silk manufacturer who also pursued painting, and his brothers, Charles and Alfred, were accomplished engravers. This lineage instilled within him not just an appreciation for art but a practical understand
ing of its various techniques, particularly engraving and lithography, skills he would master with remarkable dexterity. The revocation of the Edict of Nantes had forced the Johannot family to flee France, seeking refuge in Germany, a past that undoubtedly shaped his perspective on artistic freedom and expression.
