The Artistry of Nicholas Harding
Nicholas Harding was a British-born Australian artist known for his expressive oil paintings, particularly his portraits. His technique often involved a thickly layered impasto style, though he was also accomplished in watercolours and large-scale ink drawings, especially when capturing landscape subjects. His career was marked by significant recognition within the Australian art scene, including winning the Archibald Prize in 2001 for his portrait of John Bell as King Lear. He also received the People's Choice Award at the 2005 Archibald and the Dobell Drawing Prize in 2001.
Throughout his career, Harding's work was featured in numerous exhibitions and held in prestigious collections. His portrait Robert Drewe (in the swell) was a finalist for the Archibald Prize in 2006 and was later acquired by the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra. Other notable works include Beached (Yuraygir self portrait), which won the National Self-Portrait Prize People's Choice Award, and Eora, which won the Wynne Prize in 2022.
