Early Life and Artistic Training

Sigrid Uiga was born in Tallinn on 20 July 1922. Her path in art began in the autumn of 1944, when she started her studies at the Tartu State Art Institute (Tartu Riiklik Kunstiinstituut). By the autumn of 1946, family reasons prompted a move to Tallinn. This transition led her to the Tallinn State Applied Arts Institute (Tallinna Riiklik Tarbekunsti Instituut), where she continued her training.

She eventually moved into the specialized study of painting, graduating from the Estonian SSR State Art Institute in 1961. During her years in the studio, she learned under the guidance of several teachers, including Nyman, Haamer, Johannes Greenberg, August Jansen, and Johannes Võerahansu. These years of study shaped the technical foundation she would carry into her later career as an educator and painter.

Notable Works and Artistic Output

The progression of her work shows a steady hand across different mediums. In 1953, she produced the oil painting In the Evening. By 1956, her focus turned to the human form in Standing Nude, an oil on canvas. Her output continued through the early sixties with Metsatöölised in 1962, a work rendered in oil on canvas. During the period between 1960 and 1965, she worked on Pirita, an oil on canvas.

Her use of watercolor is seen in the 1964 piece Roses, where she signed the work "S Uiga 64" in the lower left corner. Later, in 1967, she returned to oil on canvas for Noorukid. The 1970s brought more varied subjects, including Teel in 1974 and the oil painting Kaberneeme Pine in 1979.

Where to See the Works Today

Her paintings are held in several significant collections across Estonia. The Art Museum of Estonia (Eesti Kunstimuuseum) maintains her works, as does the Tartu Art Museum. You can also find her pieces within the collection of the University of Tartu Art Museum. Additionally, the Eesti Teatri- ja Muusikamuuseum contains her art.

Beyond these institutional settings, her paintings appear in other spaces. Some of her works are found in the Allee galerii and at Artner. These locations hold pieces that reflect her presence in the local art scene.
