Philip Alexius de László, född som Fülöp Laub den 30 april 1869 i Budapest, Ungern, steg från enkla förhållanden för att bli en hyllad porträttmålare av det europeiska kungahuset och aristokratin. Hans föräldrar, Adolf och Johanna Laub, var en skräddare respektive en sömmerska av judisk härkomst. Inledningsvis arbetade han som lärling inom fotografi parallellt med sina konstnärliga studier.
