Based in Auckland, New Zealand, Chris Heaphy is a painter whose work explores cultural issues, specifically focusing on the relationship between Māori and Pākehā. Born in Palmerston North, Heaphy is of Ngāi Tahu and European descent. His formal training includes a BFA from the Ilam school of Fine Arts in Canterbury and an MFA in painting from RMIT University in Melbourne. His career has been marked by various accolades, such as the Te Waka Toi Grant, the Olivia Spencer Bower Award, and a residency at the Veuve Cliquot Ponsardin in Champagne, France.
Heaphy’s stylistic journey has seen a transition from subdued tones in his earlier compositions to the vibrant colors found in his later works. His complex compositions utilize an array of motifs drawn from Māori and European iconography, reflecting his interest in cross-cultural exchanges and his personal history. He has explored a collage-style of painting, a direction that emerged around 2003 with his installation After the Big Bang. Through these symbols, Heaphy addresses the inevitable change or slippage of meaning.

Beyond his visual art, Heaphy is a noted musician. He has collaborated with fellow guitarist Roy Montgomery on the album True.
